As vaping becomes more mainstream you still hear people throwing out arguments how unsafe it is. In my previous post I mentioned some of the undeniable benefits of vaping in comparison to smoking. In this weeks post I’ve decided to lay out some safety tips for not only the first time vaper, but the more advanced vapers out there as well. Some of these may seem like common sense, but as we all know there’s always someone out there who could benefit from learning a thing or two.
#1 Make Sure Your Batteries are Properly Wrapped and Don’t Carry Them in Your Pockets
Faulty wraps can cause your battery to short out. Although wrapping may seem decorative or like a way to tell what brand you are buying, the wraps are actually a crucial component in making sure you have a safe battery. Keep an eye on your battery’s wrap, peeling around the positive and negative contacts make for an unsafe battery. DO NOT use a battery that is unwrapped or if the wrapping is peeling. If you do notice peeling on your wrapping, don’t worry! You can usually find replacement wraps in your local vape shop or online. Be sure to have someone who knows what they are doing, if you are doing it yourself be sure to be meticulous so as not to cause more or future damage. Also, you can find tutorials online to show you how to re-wrap your batteries. DO NOT carry extra batteries in your pocket. Although it may seem easy and convenient, having something else in your pocket with the battery could accidentally cause a complete circuit between the positive and negative ends causing an explosion. Be sure to pick up a battery case to store your extra batteries and never let them charge unattended or charging for an extended period of time. Remember not to throw faulty batteries in the trash, dispose of them safely and properly at a battery recycling center.
#2 Beware of Overheating
It isn’t unusual for your mod to get a little warm if you are using it regularly. But if it gets too hot to the touch ease up and set it down. Batteries can get too hot if they are overworked. If you push them too far the chemicals inside can get too hot and begin to cause gasses, this is called venting. Without good ventilation this can cause an explosion. If your device is constantly getting too hot and will not cool down DO NOT continue to use it, it is probably time to replace it with a new one. Also, be sure to never leave your mod or your batteries in the heat. This is especially important in the summer months, avoid leaving them in car for extended periods of time.
#3 Don’t Use Your Mod if it’s Acting Weird
It doesn’t matter if you use a mechanical mod or a regulated device, if something isn’t working right DO NOT use it. Be sure to watch for any glitches like turning itself on, auto-firing, or bizarre readings. Buying a new device will always be safer than using dangerous hardware. Always read the instructions when using a new device, a few minutes of reading can prevent potentially dangerous situations and help maintain your device’s longevity. Be sure to always use the correct charger for your device.
#4 Don’t Reuse Your Bottles for Something Other than E-Juice
This should go without saying, but it happens. With the use of Gorilla Bottles on the rise refilling bottles with e-juice is quick, easy, and convenient. If you decide to use a bottle from something else, or something else be sure to wash them extremely well and exercise caution. Improperly cleaning a bottle could lead to a tainted flavor or a dangerous reaction with your device.
#5 Watch Out for Spills
This can cause damage to your device, and it can potentially be hazardous for some people if it makes contact to the skin and if ingested.
#6 Keep Away From Water
Another one that should go without saying as it’s an electronic device. If you need to clean off excess liquid use a dry paper towel or q-tip. Keeping your device clear of slippery situations is the best way to help it remain safe and have a long life.
#7 Stay Hydrated
Vaping does have the ability to leave you a bit dehydrated. Be sure to drinks lots of water, and not only while vaping. Dehydration can cause a number of short term and long term problems.
#8 Keep Out of Reach of Children and Pets
One more that should go without saying, so here it is. Only adults of age should be vaping responsibly, but it’s important to make sure that you keep your device and liquids up and away from children and pets. Injesting e-liquid can be extremely dangerous and even the most basic device has the potential to cause harm, especially to someone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Keep your kids and animals safe by storing all your vaping stuff up and out of the way to avoid unwanted accidents.
Although this is far from a definitive list, I hope these vaping tips are helpful. Vaping safely and responsibly is important, especially when it comes to the advocacy of this industry. It is just as important to educate yourself and others of the risks that may come with vaping as it is to with the benefits.
